How to Improve Your College CGPA and Still Get Placed in 2026

Can you get placed with a low CGPA? How to improve CGPA in college and what to do if yours is already low — practical strategies for BCA, B.Tech, MCA students.

CGPA is the first filter at many companies. But it's not the last — and it's not the most important. Here's what you can realistically do.

The CGPA Cutoff Reality

Company Type Typical CGPA Cutoff
TCS (all tracks) 6.0
Infosys 6.5
Wipro 6.0
Capgemini 6.0
Accenture 6.5
Product companies (startups) Often no cutoff — skills-based
FAANG / top product Resume shortlist based, no fixed cutoff

If you're above 6.5, you're eligible for most service company placements. Below 6.0, some doors close — but not all.

How to Raise Your CGPA (If You Still Have Time)

1. Target the high-weightage subjects

Each semester's CGPA contribution depends on the number of credits. Identify 2–3 high-credit subjects each semester and focus disproportionately on those.

2. Attend internal assessments seriously

At many Indian colleges, internal marks (assignments, class tests, practicals) contribute 30–40% of total marks. These are the easiest to score in — don't waste them.

3. Use past papers strategically

Most college exams repeat patterns. Solve the last 5 years' papers thoroughly. Identify repeated topics and prioritize them.

4. Build relationships with faculty

Faculty who know your name give you the benefit of doubt in viva exams and internal assessments. Attend class, ask questions, participate.

5. Study smarter, not longer

Use active recall (test yourself instead of rereading) and spaced repetition. These techniques double retention with the same study time.

If Your CGPA Is Already Low (Below 6.0)

Your path to employment must rely on demonstrating skills rather than credentials:

  1. Build a strong GitHub — 3+ real projects with live demos
  2. Get an internship (any — even unpaid) to show experience
  3. Earn recognized certifications (AWS, Java, Python certifications add credibility)
  4. Target startups first — they care about what you can build, not your CGPA
  5. Competitive coding — a LeetCode rating or CodeChef rank is hard evidence of ability
  6. Open source contributions — visible on GitHub, global credibility
