Working Professional to AI Engineer: A 12-Month Roadmap
How to transition from a working professional to an AI engineer in 12 months. Step-by-step monthly plan, resources, and realistic timeline for 0-8 years experience.
You have a job. You want to pivot to AI. Here is a realistic month-by-month roadmap.
Who This Is For
- Software developers (0–8 years) who want to move into AI/ML roles
- Analysts or data professionals wanting to add ML skills
- Non-tech professionals (MBA, operations) who want to understand and lead AI projects
Prerequisites Check
Before starting, honestly assess:
- Python comfort level (can you write functions and work with data?)
- Math comfort (are you okay with algebra and basic statistics?)
- Time available (1 hour/day minimum, 2 hours ideal)
If Python is zero, add 2 months of Python first.
Month-by-Month Plan
Month 1: Python for Data Science
- NumPy, Pandas, Matplotlib
- Data loading, cleaning, exploration
- Project: Analyze a real dataset (e.g., Kaggle Titanic or COVID data)
Month 2: Statistics & ML Foundations
- Mean, median, std dev, distributions, hypothesis testing
- Supervised vs unsupervised learning
- Linear regression from scratch
- Project: Build a salary prediction model
Month 3: Classical ML
- Logistic regression, decision trees, random forest, SVM, KNN
- scikit-learn workflow (fit, predict, evaluate)
- Cross-validation, confusion matrix, ROC-AUC
- Project: Customer churn prediction
Month 4: Feature Engineering & Model Evaluation
- Handling missing data, encoding categorical variables
- Feature selection and importance
- Hyperparameter tuning (GridSearchCV, RandomSearch)
- Project: Improve your Month 3 model significantly
Month 5: Deep Learning Basics
- Neural networks — architecture, forward pass, backprop
- TensorFlow or PyTorch (pick one)
- CNNs for image data, RNNs for sequential data
- Project: Image classifier (cat vs dog)
Month 6: NLP & Text AI
- Text preprocessing (tokenization, stemming, lemmatization)
- Embeddings (Word2Vec, GloVe)
- Transformer basics — attention mechanism
- Project: Sentiment classifier on product reviews
Month 7: Generative AI & LLMs
- How LLMs work (at a conceptual level)
- OpenAI API / Hugging Face
- Prompt engineering
- RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation)
- Project: Document Q&A chatbot
Month 8: Agentic AI
- LangChain / LangGraph
- Building agents with tools
- Memory and context management
- Project: AI research assistant agent
Month 9: MLOps & Deployment
- FastAPI for serving ML models
- Docker for containerization
- Cloud deployment (AWS SageMaker or GCP Vertex AI)
- CI/CD for ML pipelines
- Project: Deploy your Month 3 model as a REST API
Month 10–11: Specialization + Portfolio
- Pick a domain: computer vision, NLP, recommendation systems, or time series
- Build 2 portfolio-worthy projects with live demos
- Write 3–4 blog posts explaining your projects
Month 12: Job Search
- Update resume with AI skills and projects
- LeetCode and ML interview prep
- Mock interviews
- Apply to AI engineer, ML engineer, data scientist roles
Expected Outcome
After 12 consistent months: Junior AI/ML Engineer roles at ₹8–18 LPA, or 30–50% salary bump at your current company with an AI role switch.
